Young and Gaults Glasgow Supermarket Sweep

Following heavy controversy about plans for housing above a Tesco supermarket in Glasgow Harbour, new designs have been unveiled.

Young and Gault have taken over from Ian Burke Associates on this scheme called Sawmill Square which will make up another part of the growing Glasgow Harbour project - a dense mixed use development on a waterside location just off the River Clyde at Sawmill Road.

Rising to 16 floors, the proposal occupies two sides of the site standing above the planned Tesco superstore stepping up progressively to a corner allowing a multitude of roof terraces for the occupiers of the 252 new homes planned within.

Last time round the housing blocks were even given colour palettes similar to supermarket chain's corporate identity that caused much protest. Young and Gault have tackled this issue by coming up with something that has a standard post modern look of blue glass and solid brown instead of the previous Tesco value aesthetic.

Despite the relatively large number of homes they only take up a fraction of the total roof that the store could have but with approaching an enormous 13,000 square metres of retail space proposed this is hardly surprising.

938 car parking spaces are included both on the ground level and in basement parking, an enormous amount for a development and one that is bound to raise the hackles of environmentalists and locals horrified at traffic levels so much parking can create.

Whether they are successful in getting approval remains to be seen. The previous scheme was savaged for a number of reasons including not only the traffic but the fact that many think Glasgow really doesn't need yet another Tesco let alone the largest one in the entire city. Whether they can pull it off this time is anyone's guess.
