Huge Belfast Planning Application Approved

The second phase of the massive Titanic Quarter in Belfast has been given outline approval today.
Getting the thumbs up from Northern Ireland's environment minister, Arlene Foster, the planning application which has in total almost 300,000 square meters of space is the largest yet seen in Northern Ireland. Despite this it only makes up 16.5 hectares of the 75 hectare total that the Titanic Quarter will eventually fill.
The scheme not only includes about 2000 new homes that make up two thirds of the space within, but a tourist showpiece of 11,300 square metres that is centred around the heritage of Belfast and the fated sunken liner that the proposal takes its name from and is currently applying for lottery funding.
As part of this new tourist centre there will be a 50 metre long scale model of the Titanic and maritime museum that faces the restored 300 metres x 80 metres slipways built for the Titanic and her sister ship the Olympic which can double as a huge open space. Their sheer size should serve as a poignant reminder of the scale of the original ocean liners and as a memorial for the many lives lost.
There will also be 37,000 square metres for employment uses including 5,000 square metres of office space, 23,000 square metres of leisure space, and 5,500 square metres for local services such as health and education.
The entire project has been master planned by Eric Kuhne for Titanic Quarter Limited, a company set to manage development by the Harcourt Developments Group and Belfast Harbour Commissioners. The first part at Abercorn Quay is already under construction.
