Developer Union are launching their first project in London called Arthaus located off Richmond Road in E8.
Located on a site about 1 and a half miles north east of the City of London in the London borough of Hackney, the project will regenerate what has been until recently storage space for an art supplier.
Arthaus will contain 45 apartments and 3 townhouses, affordable housing, plus 1,700 square metres of space that can be used by creative companies either for offices or as art studios creating what could well end up as a modern artists colony. There will also be a cinema room, communal cold storage for frozen food deliveries and a roof garden offering views stretching to the City of London and beyond.
Hamiltons Architects are the firm working on the project. Having retained the distinctive brick warehouse look of the outside of the building respecting its roots, the main bulk of the work will go on gutting its innards and bringing the interior up to date.
The most notable part of the design is the central atrium that the apartments face on to on the inside and runs all the way to the top of the building. Entered via a central reception that has retail space off it, it will serve on the ground level partly as a meeting area for residents of the building. Overlooking this is a network of timbered balconies and interior walkways that provide the routes to connect the apartments and work spaces.
Construction work on the scheme will be getting underway in May 2008 with completion scheduled for August 2009.
