Trials and Tribulations of Sarah Tower

Published on 27-09-2007 by Skyscrapernews.com
BSC are a developer in Manchester who have been working on a number of projects including the Sarah Tower.

Being a wannabe big player they aren't just a developer in the traditional sense but also have their own contractor arm to build their schemes as it means they "have control over each project and the quality of the work... through to final construction and finish".

For almost a year people watched with growing incredulity at their initial attempts at construction of the Sarah Tower which featured pushing dirt from one of the site to the other in conditions more akin to the Battle of the Somme than the rapid groundwork most developers carry out.

This year started with things looked more promising as progress was being made on site. Actual structural construction got underway despite the difficult nature of the site that bounds water on two sides.

However recently BSC have recieved a number of health and safety enforcement notices for unspecified sites as a contractor which are ranging from improperly supported outriggers on the crane to the "lack of edge protection on the roof of the structure".

Most incredibly was one filed on the 5th of July on an unnamed site regarding "regional electricity company supply of electricity on site as numerous circuits were found unearthed and combined neutral earth conductors were used to supply electrical equipment."

Numerous infringements that were not acted on were also photographed by photographers of Skyscrapercity as shown by the image to the right of a builder working on the Sarah Tower without a hard-hat.

Then on the second of August one of the builders at the Sarah Tower, a 47 year Pole, was killed by a falling metal girder and the site was immediately shut down whilst the Health and Safety Executive and Greater Manchester Police carry out an investigation.

Work has not recommenced since with the only change having been a large amount of hoardings added that completely block off views to passers-by and photographers.

BSC have been pushing on with the finishing touches to another of their developments, Issa Quay but there's no indication as to when work will restart on the Sarah Tower.
